On July 4th, the District of Lin’an held its 2021 “Healthy Living in Tianmu” event, with a distinct focus on harnessing the infinite potential of the life sciences sector to establish and develop a premier healthtech ecosystem, which encourages innovation and entrepreneurship, in the jurisdiction.

Ling Li, Director of the Management Committee of Chengxi District Science and Technology Industry Cluster and Dinggan Tong, Secretary of Lin'an District Party Committee, delivered their respective speeches. Weihong Tan, Academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a keynote entitled "Molecular Medicine Boosts Healthy China", discussing the necessity, importance, feasibility and direction of the future development of molecular medicine.

Guozheng Yang, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee and District Mayor, issued letters of appointment to academicians Weihong Tan and Hefeng Huang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changgen Feng, Academician at the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Xianping Yao, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and Weike Su, a special expert of Zhejiang Province, with all five sector experts being engaged to attract investment, global talent, and knowledge transfer to assist in establishing Lin'an District’s healthtech ecosystem.

(Project contract signing ceremony at the conference) In addition to the companies present, 25 other enterprises have also signed tenancy agreements at the Tianmu Bio-Pharm Accelerator. The precinct will establish a robust ecosystem value chain with services ranging from R&D, incubation, acceleration to commercialization, whilst integrating support from overseas technology innovation centers, an open CXO innovation platform and various satellite platforms.

(Academician panel sessions and innovation forums at the conference) In the key panel discussion session, Jianan Wang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Second Hospital, Weiming Qi, Secretary of Zhejiang Medical Device Evaluation Center, and Qifeng Yu, Chairman and CEO of NewMed Medical, respectively discussed recent policies influencing medical device technology innovation, innovative and entrepreneurial practices, operational trends, commercial investment strategies, etc. The expert panel also engaged with the audience on the topic of "innovative direction of the interventional device industry in the context of centralized procurement".

As one of the sectors that underpins the strategic development of China, the life sciences industry has experienced unprecedented growth and accelerated development in recent times. Ecosystem integration and technological innovation have combined to provide domestic biotechs with the requisite competitive advantage to successfully break-through on the international scene. As a gateway to Hangzhou’s western region, Lin’an District takes on the heavy lifting of integrating the rest of the province to the city’s Western Science and Technology Innovation Corridor. The authorities have proactively earmarked vacant land for future precinct establishment, aggressively recruited talent and provided significant support for the growth of the life sciences industry. Through attracting Big Pharma and the establishment of a robust network of sector support services, the Lin’an district aims to play a leading role in shaping the domestic life sciences industry with the Tianmu Bio-Pharm Accelerator as an indispensable flagship.
